Fall Prevention in the home

As a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES), I work with many Seniors that have Fallen.  Usually, I receive the call to sell their home after they have fallen,   Let’s try to prevent the fall in the first place, here is a great video of safety and fall prevention in the home.   Many of these ideas to help prevent falling is good information for all of us in our own homes.

Anyone can fall, statistics show that one third of people 65+will fall and potentially more then one time.  According to the CDC, one our of five falls causes serious injury such as broken bones or head injury.  Each year, 2.5 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.  Over 700,000 patients are hospitalized each year because of a fall injury, most often head injury or hip fractures.  Each year at least 250,000 of these patients are older.  Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.  People who have fallen, often become afraid of failing again and become less active.  They grow weaker and can fall easier again.

Some things you can do to prevent falls:

  • Exercise
  • Review all medications and supplements for possible side effects and interactions
  • Have your vision and hearing checked
  • Keep your glasses clean
  • Wear sturdy, well-fitting shoes with non-skid soles
  • Take care of your feet, talk with your Doctors about pain, numbness, tingling or sores that don’t heal
